The airport will cater for over a million passengers annually
The Lanet military airstrip will be expanded and will see Nakuru host a modern international airport, which will serve both military and civilian passengers once accomplished.
The Sh. 3Billion facility is located at the 81 Tank Battalion Barracks in Lanet, and will replace the Military Lanet Airstrip.
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui said in an interview that being located in agricultural county, the new airport will ease transportation of farm produce from the county to international markets, while promoting tourism.
“The Airport will boost transport of horticulture produce from Naivasha which traditionally had to be taken to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and also boost tourism,” Mr Kinyanjui said.
Phase one of the project, involving construction of a 1.7km runway; construction of taxiways and terminals; a military lounge; air rescue centre; fence; and military and civilian gates, will be completed by August 2022 at a cost of Sh406 million. The airstrip, which is next to the Kenya Military Academy – about 10 km from Nakuru town, will be expanded in partnership with the county government
